know that I am going to get some resistance from the March Madness clan and even some from the Super Bowl groups, but for me,  this is the best time of the year for sports. I am talking about the months of August through October. You don’t believe me? Let’s take a look at what we have.

Baseball is in full bloom. The trade deadline has passed and the divisional races are heating up.

The playoffs and World Series always make the transition from shorts to sweaters a bit more bearable.

The granddaddy of them all is in its infancy. Training camps for the NFL have started, and this week we will have a full slate of the all important pre-season games. Yeah, I know it’s not the most eye pleasing experience, but it’s  important for that third string tight end. Nonetheless, it’s football, and in a few weeks the Red Zone will be popping, and Super Bowl dreams will be in the making.

Golf is reaching its pinnacle. The playoffs will begin next week. This year we have the Presidents Cup. The new PGA season starts again in October with the Sanderson Farms Championship, and then I await my PGA event here in Vegas in mid-October.

I did not forget that school starts, and with that we are introduced to college football. This year the landscape has been altered, but that will not stop the pageantry that we love, even though some rivals have waved goodbye. I am excited this season, as the UNLV Rebels football schedule has three games that garner our family’s attention; Syracuse, Boise State, and now that my oldest son is part of the Pack, Nevada is a must go.

I know that most of our energy goes into college football, but it is also the start of many other college sports. My daily check on the latest news on the UCONN Huskies soccer team is a personal tradition. There are so many fall sports besides soccer that get started, so go check them out.

The NHL begins their quest for the cup in September as camps open. No, I am not one hundred percent sure what team I am going to be a fan of. I do know it won’t be the UHC.

Finally, don’t forget that your local high school and middle school sports also begin. Friday Night lights season is so special in so many areas of our country. Other athletes begin their seasons as well, so make it a point to attend a high school or middle school sporting event.

What I am saying is that it feels like New Year’s Day on the sports calendar. So for all the teachers and students going back to school or starting in a new school, have a great year. To all our MAS followers, Happy New Sports Year!
